Join us at Babi's Tasting Room where Bob Oswaks, President for Life of WELL BREAD in LA, will discuss the transformation of mere water and flour into something triumphant.

"How can a nation be called great if it's bread tastes like Kleenex?" Julia Child

Bread is something that we have all eaten in some form or another throughout our lives.  In my Macedonian family, bread is a staple food that has always been a part of every meal (if not most times in the village the bulk of the meal!)  As my father tells the story, everyone used to eat brown bread or whole grain bread baked in community ovens in his village until after World War II when white flour became accessible and in vogue. The local corner stores in each village began selling cheap white bread baked in large factory bakeries.  Families that still baked their own brown bread were seen as impoverished.  (Even though everyone was!)

Boy what a mistake that was!

The bread cycle sways to and fro in Western nations - from Wonder Bread that I am not sure even has wheat flour as an ingredient (tee hee) to our resurgence in traditional artisan breads baked after extended fermentations, the kind Julia Child fundamentally understood and the kind my grandparents always enjoyed - we are here to experience bread the way it is supposed to be.

Under the guidance of Bob Oswaks who creates incredible loaves by hand for all of us to enjoy in our local restaurants and for direct personal orders, we will learn the methods and the magic that it takes to create delicious, healthful, irresistible loaves.

Join us at Babi's Tasting Room where Jason Mergenov, dedicated Los Alamos resident extraordinaire and Old Days Codger, will discuss our town's tribulations and triumphs through the years.

FROM JASON:

I have always been interested in history, from the civil war to WWII.  While I am only an armature historian, and by no means an expert, living in Los Alamos provides an opportunity to delve into the history of one small town and examine it from the “old west” and Spanish land grant days through today.
The basis for this talk came about through researching the history of Los Alamos in preparation for the 66th Annual Los Alamos Old Day’s festival, which will take place next week.  Researching on the Library of Congress website uncovered many newspaper articles from the late 1800s through the early 1900s that give a glimpse of our town right after it was founded.  From stage coach robberies and a railroad line through town that no longer exists, to an earthquake 110 years ago that shook the town for weeks.  What once was thought to be the seat of a brand new county to the little time capsule it is today.
My goal is to share those stories with you and answer any questions as best I can and hopefully give a bit of history of our “Little LA”.

Join us at Babi's Tasting Room where Jennifer Beyer, Incident Commander for the Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue team and volunteer member since 2001, will discuss the team's work and commitment.

ABOUT JENNIFER:

"I first became interested in joining the search and rescue team when I saw an ad in the Santa Ynez Valley newspaper: "Looking for volunteers". The ad intrigued me because it stated I would be able to hike in the back country, learn new skills, meet new people, and overall, give back something to the community.

Following a 6 month academy, I graduated and became a Trainee. Over the next two years, I responded to approximately 150 callouts, all over the county, and assisted other counties in mutual aid for missing hikers, at risk adults, and children.

During my third year on the Team I moved up to field member, and then on to rescue member. It was during the next 3 years, that I was an apprentice Incident Commander, and became a full Incident Commander later that year. As an Incident Commander I have directed many operations working with the Fire Department, Forest Service, out of county teams, etc. I have participated in 2 hour searches up to 3 day searches. We have had successful outcomes, and tragic ones. Thankfully many more successful callouts.

On Friday, I hope to talk about the Teams history, current # of callouts, our most noteable searches and rescues, and show some of our specialized equipment.  I also want to give some tips about today's back country, and how "not to get into trouble"
